I think Sebastian is the bad guy in the movie. He had all the different futures in his hands, especially the one where they stayed together, but he made selfish choices that broke them up. He had the "power to choose," for that reason I think he felt more regret than Mia did in the final jazz club scene. I still think they should be together. "The right person at the wrong time."

I just recently watched La La Land for the very first time (I know I’m very very late to the party) and it has been stuck on my mind for a week straight. I found myself in awe of this film but particularly the visuals and its ending dreamlike sequence. This thesis was such a beautiful video to watch because it showed me what I was thinking as well. So thank you and well done.

i noticed one thing; this movie gave me more peace and hope about love and all those things rather than romcoms that straight-up give a happy ending, not that there is anything wrong with happy endings but this ending to me make feel less alone and that everything will be okay

Iiiiiiiiiii don't know if putting that much "blame" on Seb is right. To me ending montage feels more like "Mia's dreams", not their own, but her. And maybe in this exact moment Seb has its own view of the "what could have been". Maybe he dreamed about what could have been if she doesn't go to Paris and, well, doesn't succed. But I think in the end even if he did, and even couting montage that we had - it was just a dream. And maybe even not a good one, because this way Mia would miss on her dream (and on this part I understand, that we kinda mish-mashing two dreams, "ultimate goal" one and "sleepy unrealistic" one :D ) , like how here we get to see how he actually lost his dream - he doesn't play jazz and, most importantly, they went to the bar... in it is not his bar. There is another man - yeah, atleast it is a jazz one after all, but in this dream Mia is happy and succesful and he is just there... happy. Not a bad thing nontheless. But still. So even if he has his own dream that time - it probably would not include Mia's success and, especially because we seen how much he cared about it, I doubt that he would be as happy if this was true... Damn... this is such a good movie. And it so interesting how much idea, dimensions and just LIFE could be cramped into 2 hours. And especialy how it could be cramped into this one scene. But point about how Seb doesn't asked Mia when he went to new job is not that good IMHO. Because they WERE talking about it when Mia showed him her draft of her piece and her idea about "Seb's" - she asked about his friend and maybe he could work with him. And then in a next scene it was clearly showed that she kinda wanted him to do this, because of all that talk with her mom via phone. So Seb do what he must. He pushed his dream aside because sometimes you must do things in a real world. So its kinda cruel to bash him about it and say that he done it wrong. Especially "Dude, you betrayed your dreams because money... btw, if you didn't - you still would be missing on it, because if you don't worked with your friend then you would be with me in Paris, missing on you dream about jazz-bar". So... again, not a bad take at all, but, as most things in a La-La Land - this is not that simple and easy in life... And yeah, I hope we all agree that "Oh, what kind of life would be if everything would be the same, but instead this person I would be with that guy" - is a flawed thinking that lovely to do time to time, but would not work 99% of the time. Because if you would be with another person - you would be living another live. So... in the end I think La-La Land is awesome and it got a sweet, good ending. A sad one, yeah, but good and, well, right. Only piece that was missing to be a perfect end-goal of this two - if Seb finally find someone that he could accept and love, maybe more "grounded" (because two artistic, abitious people in one could is a recipe for disaster), that loves just jazz and, maybe something that she could show him like he showed Mia his love for jazz. So they all would be happy - with his dreams and his reality.... Damn, sorry for all this. 3 a.m, and here I am, writing this stuff up on my broken english :D I just LOVE this movie.

Does Mia have any right to feel sad remorseful or nostalgic when she did that to herself by marrying another man? She fails to recognize that the only person that believed in her was Sabastion. He wasn't perfect, but who is? Turned out that he cared more for her then she did for him, and so he can't be sad that their relationship failed as so many do. The truth about relationships is that they are so fragile and with every decision you either grow together or you grow apart. Choose wisely.

I don’t know if anyone is going to see this but I feel like I had to comment something about this film. I watched it for the first time recently and I haven’t been able to get it out my head - it is a true masterpiece. My interpretation of the ending is one that I’ve come up with as I tried to find a true understanding of it. I believe that the vision of the fantasy world is from Mia’s perspective. I feel like seb has had to deal with/accept moving on in a different way. We see that he walks past a large poster on the way to his jazz club which is something we can presume he does all the time. We also see through the sign of his jazz club that he’s taken a piece of Mia with him on his dream. As she designed the image. Almost accepting that this is the way he has to represent his love for her. However it can be seen that Mia’s way was moving on was different as she has started a family with someone new. It is also implied that she is rarely in LA anymore as she says ‘I don’t miss this’ when in traffic - highlighting the coincidence of her finding his jazz club (mirroring their early relationship as coincidence brought them together). However, when she arrives at the jazz club, we can see a clear and profound reaction. One of almost guilt and an overwhelming rush of emotions, as the first time seb sees her since their separation is with someone new. The horror on her face is only amplified when seb plays ‘their’ song, possibly something he has always planned on doing. We see the life they could’ve had together if things were different. The experiences are with seb instead of her current husband - almost a vision she was longing to have as we can also see the contrast in the way they are sat together in the jazz club. Seb was her true love and she knows it - this deeply affects her. Finally, the last scene of the film shows her stepping into a purple light (the colour of Mia and sebs relationship), almost a final glimpse at their relationship. Seb’s smile (to me) seems like one of reassurance, an acceptance that they did the right thing in order to achieve what they wanted. Her smile back is one of relief, the fact the she can see he is happy brings her peace and provides the final closure that they need. Once again, I’ve probably over thought this but I hope someone can see this and perhaps share this opinon. It is a true masterpiece of a film that I will surely rewatch.

The choices we make have consequences. Although they loved each other deeply, Seb disrespected Mia. He mocked her dreams and made her feel less on multiple occasions. He did try to make it up to her with driving her to the audition, but they had both known by then that there was no going back. All they could do now is wish each other the best. Sometimes that is all we can do when it comes to our relationships.

I absolutely never write any comments on UA-cam. But I just watched La La Land for the first time 24 hours ago and it’s absolutely beautiful. In my opinion, it’s a perfect movie. The film has been out so long I knew to expect a sad ending, but absolutely nothing in the world could’ve prepared me for the emotions this movie would be bring. This movie is a masterpiece and a work of art and I cannot wait to rewatch it and discover new things. I’ve never felt so impacted by a movie. The music, cinematography, the performances, everything was flawless and so captivating. I cannot believe how long it took me to watch this work of art.

I truly do not care what your dream is… if your dream is preventing you from love, then the fulfillment of your dream is not worth it and will lead you into an unhappy and unfulfilled life. There is no pursuit that means your can’t be with your loved one.

When he told her he was staying in LA and he wanted her to go to Paris he also said they should see what happened because SHE HAD TO GIVE IT HER ALL REGARDLESS OF WHAT SHE THOUGHT OF HIM OR THEIR FUTURE. They do not end by saying "I love you", they say "I will always love you" which usually means I will always love the memories of our time together. Get off of Sebastian's back.

What a romantic little guy you are, but you seem to lay 100% of the blame on Sebastian. So, he should always put Mia first and done what exactly? It appears to me that Sebastian sacrificing his dream is what made her dream possible. Because he was making money she got to quit. He also talked her into writing a script and I don't recall her saying she wanted to be a scriptwriter. What makes you think that just him being there would have filled the theater? PeopSebastian could have chosen Mia instead of himself? In marriage putting everyone else first usually ends in someone not having a dream fulfilled at all. How many women, my age, gave up any dream they had to get married and put him through school and get him to the top? I quit to have a baby which was my dream and we are still together after 47 years. I don't know if you are married, but keep dreaming. I think the ending shows that they both got what they wanted and appeared to be happy.

  • @midwintersnight
    @midwintersnight 8 місяців тому

The ending shots are the most important to me. Mia and Seb look at each other, and they both know that the other has achieved their dream. They just didn't do it together. But that's okay. Because they've both moved on, and they're happy for each other. Yes, maybe they could've been together in another universe, but this one is just as good. Mia has a husband now, and I'm sure that Seb has someone. They're both happy. And the look that they exchange shows that they're happy for each other. No bitterness left. No grudges. No clinging onto the past. Just contentment in life.

  • @kentuckyfriedchildren5385

I don't know, I feel like, the ending is wishful thinking, the reason they both achieved their dreams is because they were both uncompromising in their pursuits, they were both willing to sacrifice each other in order to achieve their dreams. I feel like that message is a lot more powerful. It tells you that you can't have everything, you have to choose, that you can achieve anything, as long as you are willing to sacrifice anything and everything.

I don't think Seb was ever choosing himself over Mia.. he joined the band for Mia (because he was embarrassed, not because he's selfish). Furthermore, I doubt he'd ever get the success (the club) he wanted without the band. the play, though, YEAH was a shit move

I am way late to this commentary. I landed here because I just discovered Damien Chazelle - the writer director of La La Land - by watching Babylon first ... My takeaway "You follow - and sacrifice - what you love most". Great films in my opinion and I can see very similar themes in both. The stark difference is this one has the happy ending for the artists whereas its a tragic ending in Babylon. La La Land is light, beautiful. Babylon is dark, hard to watch at times (over the top). Both are about the entertainment industry.

Im a bit late to the video but such a great point of view Michael, since you have said yours i wanna say mine asswell.I watched the movie more then one time and only the last time i have seen i got this crazy feeling that the movie was way too onesided(mias side) when in the first place i thought was about both of them(since in the oppening the direct is presenting both perspectives)but in the end what is acctually so sad about it is that they both reached out their dreams (carrier wise) seb with his club and mia with acting the differces being seb never got past mia (witch i think is how man really are about love when you really find the one and you just cant get over it ) in the ending it shows us how seb is at the club singning a paper and the guy says “not so bad seb” and seb replays “not so bad is good enough for me” witch shows the missery in his life and the loneliness after mia left when on the other side mia is happyly married with a kid and full of life it shows how life is for a women vs how is for a men even for mias husband if you think about it after 5 years mia went through all of that in her head with her husband right next to her the ending i think shows us how life can be sometimes so unfair to man 1.for seb because he maybe waited all this time for mia to come back and live happy toghether 2.for mias husband witch will never have with mia what she and seb had p.s-Sorry if the imagine is a bit blurry but it fullfilled with emotions

He literally gave up his dream for her because of her. He joined the band after hearing her talking on the phone with her mother. But she sacrificed love in order to achieve her dream, which, by the way, was the reason for the opportunity to achieve it.. I'm still wondering how she was able to give it up? Does love hinder the realization of dreams, or does love make it easier?

La la land is such a good movie because of the way it ends in my opinion, while mia and sebastian don’t end up together it shows us that they both achieved their dreams and enjoy their life. One big thing about life is we are alone and at the end of the day we only have ourselves and i thinks it’s so powerful that the writers recognized that and showed each characters individual success. While a ending where mia and sebastian are together would be great to see the fact that it isn’t the “perfect ending” is what makes the movie powerful and touching to many. People come in and out of our lives but it’s how they affect us that matters, mia and sebastians relationship was important because they ultimately helped each other achieve their goals, and the look the two share at the end of the movie shows they are aware of that and both still care for each other and will always love one another.

i love your interpretation and agree with everything up to the "cautionary tale" bit... I think the movie is about the tho sides of the same coin that are 'dreams' and 'sacrifice'... as an artist, you can't achieve your dreams without sacrificing other thing in life. careers are so hard, that's just a consequence of pursuing something you're passionate about. it's not literally about, "you can't have both success and romance at the same time", it's just a metaphor for sacrifice. whiplash is a different representation of this theme. nevertheless, I love you video!

IMHO, Without the other neither would have achieved their dreams. Staying together would have prevented both from achieving them. Notice after the audition Mia defers to Seb, what "happens with us?" He tells her she has to put everything into this chance, knowing that going with her to Paris would get in her way and sidetrack him as well. She accepts without protest knowing he's probably right. The epilogue is Mia's fantasy, achieving her dreams that included being with Seb. As she's leaving the club Mia again looks to Seb, perhaps for affirmation, perhaps a for sign he's feeling what she is. His smile and nods says, "Thank you, I wouldn't be here without you, and I'm happy for you." Mia acknowledges with her own smile saying, "You were right. I'm happy for you, too. And, thank you." Both wishing it could have been together, both knowing they were just right for each other at the right time but the bittersweetness it was not meant to be.

I can't remember why I actually did decide to, but by the end of the film I was so devastated. The ending just haunted me. I kept watching the film over and over again, and each time I was so deeply sad that Mia and Seb didn't end up together. The two actors have amazing chemistry too. A great video thank you, explaining the show not tell technique. (A good one for anyone trying to connect with others on SM.) I'm now waiting for more reaction channels to react to this film. I've only seen one so far, and she was bawling by the end too.

This was an excellent analysis of one of the greatest endings. I Loved it. I’ll just add that in every ending there is a sacrifice and a personal “death” that occurs for the heroes. Yes, Seb and Mia got what they dreamed for, but a part of them has died inside. The wordless, emotional, dream montage, full of could’ve-beens makes that death even more poignant. The contrast and tension of fun vs loss within those sequences also resonates. My heart drops in that movement when Mia says she doesn’t want to stay for another song. She accepts this loss and can’t do anything about it. She’s not going to run to Seb. She has a husband and more importantly a child. But before she leaves the club she turns as if seeing him for the last time. Seb looks up and that wordless exchange, and that smile of acknowledgement of their shared love and respect for each other says it all. They can look at each other, even with all their flaws, to still say “I love you.” It’s this all important point of acknowledgement (sometimes said outright) that is expressed beautifully in his smile. That bitter sweet last minute gesture, where they both have to dare themselves to look, even at the risk of the other not acknowledging them, has within in it has all the tension and release of an apology to each other that kills me. That smile that acknowledgement is all that makes them flawed, beautiful and human. If Story shows us the way to see our own humanity, this movie does it in spades.
